Why every company needs a global mindset

A cheat code for global growth

I recently came across an article in the Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies that discussed the concept of a global mindset. The authors defined it as cultural intelligence and the ability to understand global business. Leaders with a global mindset could read different cultures, adapt quickly, and make decisions that were effective both locally and globally. A global mindset also helped companies notice geopolitical, market-related, or technological changes.

In today’s connected world, developing this mindset through experience and training is essential. The operating environment for international trade is changing faster than anyone expected: the rising geopolitical tensions (the war in the Middle East and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine), the review of trade agreements (EU-USA), rapid technological advancement (especially AI), and security policy developments (EU’s move toward greater economic security and independence).

For small and medium‑sized businesses (SMEs), timely and reliable information is essential for decision‑making. A global mindset also improves risk management by helping companies react faster to geopolitical changes.

Global mindset in everyday practice

In the early 2000s I worked in international trade with a focus on Russia and often travelled there for negotiations. At that time, women were not greeted with a handshake, and although it felt strange, I had to accept it. Later, I understood that it was simply a cultural norm and that respecting local practices was part of a global mindset. A global mindset is not something big or complicated: it can come from understanding small everyday behaviors in different cultures.

It requires continuous learning

At the end of the day, a global mindset is about how we choose to look at the world. It is a skill that can be learned, and it encourages openness and the ability to adapt. When we stay curious, pay attention to what happens beyond our own borders and learn from others, we tend to notice opportunities earlier. But it’s also something we are never fully finished with. Learning is continuous.

Need one more reason to keep your mindset global? Companies that focus only on their domestic market are likely to miss solutions used in other countries and overlook alternative ways of working. So, if you want to get ahead of others, think globally.
